Management 211 Terms Test #1 Chapter 1- Vocabulary Civil Law : Law that provides remedies for individuals or entities that have been wronged by the other individual or entity. The primary purpose is reimbursement or restitution. Common Law : Judge-made law Constitutional Law : Law derived from the United States Constitution. The constitution is the Supreme Law of the land. Criminal Law : Designed to further society’s interest in preventing crime and punishing criminals. The primary purpose is punishment. Dispute resolution role of law : When the law gives the people and businesses entities a forum to settle their differences whether it be through the enforcement of contracts, the recognition of private property rights or some other legal issue. Equitable Action : An action used to avoid unjust results from strictly following common law. Equitable remedies : Only available where the monetary (legal) damage is too late or does no good. Involves a court order. Try to avoid harm. Equity
