Block Diagram Camera (sensor) GPS (location) Computer (computing and analysis) Accelerator/ Brake (speed) Steering wheel (direction) Other devices control Figure 1 Block Diagram (1) Camera (sensor): To receive the environment and road condition quickly and correctly, using a set of high-resolution and high-sensitive cameras is necessary. They can not only put them on the car roof but also set them on side mirrors and around the car so that they can detect the environment all around the car. (2) GPS (location): Using GPS to locate the location and orientation is one of the significant keys to navigate the driverless cars. They can make use of GPS to calculate optimal route or routes we set. (3) Computer (computing and analysis): By the information which is from cameras and GPS, they have to analyze information to control accelerator, brake, steering wheel, etc. we can see the computer as human brain. (4) Controlled devices: Some devices, such as accelerator, brake, steering wheel, light, are the essential devices which need to be controlled correctly. 2. The key design challenges (1) Video/Image processing: They have to use high-sensitive cameras to ensure environment changed time by time so that computer can control car safely. In addition, they need to synthesis different video from different cameras which they setup around the car and then analyze the huge information instantly. In the
