Andrea RosalesCST 110 (E09N)Analysis of the problema.Causes of the problem: Legalizing guns in colleges is a controversial issue. Many argue that allowing people to carry concealed weapons in college campuses will decrease crimes. However, both Utah and Colorado have legalized the right to carry concealed weapons in colleges and both states have experienced increased crime and a drop in enrollment ever since it became legal for students and faculty to carry guns. The rape rate in Utah and Colorado campuses has increased: “Since all public colleges in Colorado have been forced to allow campus carry (2012-2013), the rate of rape has increased 25% in 2012 and 36% in 2013 (15.2 and 20.8 per 100,000 respectively). In Utah, where campus carry has been permitted (2004), the rape statistics have fluctuated greatly over the past ten years with the last four years going from 6.6 – 10.7 – 9.3 – 14(2013) per 100,000.” (Keepgunsoffcampus.org) Overall, gun ownership increases a rise in crime rate.
