Critical thinking 3 Gender identity is affected by many ways, especially in advertising toys. Why kids? Although they are not the ones spending, they are the ones who drive their parents to buying them a certain toy. Children’s thinking is more like, “he has it, I need it to.” So, if boys and girls have a similar thought, then wouldn’t they convince their parents that a certain toy makes them happy. Parents like to maintain their kids happy and reward them for good behaviors and actions, what’s the easiest way to reward them? A toy. Depending on how the advertisement is laid out determines who it is going towards. Each toy is represented by either gender. Inside activities are usually represented by a girl while boys represent outside activities. As our book claims, at an early age we are ‘bombarded with commercials.’ Male and female are powerful symbols, as the graph demonstrates, boy advertising is more commonly use compared to girls.
