Britney Pettigrew Week 2 DB: Cultural Competent Care Scenario: 23 year-old Native American male (MR) MR is a 23 year old male Native American who comes into the clinic with anxiety. He says that he consumes alcohol for and smokes pot to alleviate his on-going problem with anxiety. A study conducted show that Native Americans have a higher death rate due to alcohol abuse as well as smoking than whites (Epsey et al., 2014). Native Americans adults have anxiety and depression in more than 50% of their population, which is a great percentage among their population given they only account for 1.4% of the total population (Carter et al., 2012). Native Americans also have a great in-depth knowledge of botanical medicines and herbal medicines that among their culture serves as their first-line treatment (Howard University College of Medicine, n.d.). Other ways this population treats themselves is through POW-WOWs, sweat lodges, smudging, and spiritual consulting (Carter et al., 2012; Howard University College of Medicine, n.d.). Conversations were completed among Native Americans regarding their feelings around mental health and participants disclosed that they felt they were losing their cultural roots
