MILESTONE THREE2Introduction:On February 25, 1990, Terri Schiavo collapsed in her apartment, experiencing severe hypoxia for several minutes, believed to have been caused by a potassium imbalance related to an eating disorder. Four months later, Terri was deemed incompetent. Terri had not executed a living will or durable power of attorney. Her husband, Michael, was appointed her legal guardian. Since Terri was unable to swallow, she underwent a procedure for the placement of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube. In late 1990, it was determined that Terri wasin a persistent vegetative state (Perry, Churchill & Kirshner, 2005). According to Fremgen (2016), Terri’s husband and her parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, were friendly until a judge awarded $1 million to Terri (to be controlled by her husband Michael) in a malpractice suit. The Schindlers argued that Michael stopped Terri’s therapy, and used the awarded moneys to pay lawyer fees so as to have her feeding tube removed. Terri’s parents asserted that their daughter
