Professor Johnson English 105 24 January 2007 Summary Essay In her article One Picture is Worth a Thousand Diets , W. Charisse Goodman brings into light how prejudiced our society is towards larger women in television and movies, the personals, and in various forms of print. She reveals eye-opening results of research she did showing the dominant presence of thinner women versus larger women in various forms of media. Goodman first analyzes the media’s portrayal of larger women in television and movies. She brings up the gender differences and how these differences are seen by the public and states that, “size in a man is often considered either a sign of physical power or a matter of no consequence,” (467) showing society’s view of a man being larger as not being an issue, but for a woman being a huge issue. Goodman also brings up the issue of roles that larger women generally play on screen versus thinner women. She gives examples from various television shows and movies, showing that many times
