JlMC 101 Chapters 17 and 18 Chapter 17: Mass Media and Society Mass Media Role in Culture (p. 390) Elitist v. Populist Views An "elite" or "highbrow" view of culture says media should "teach" and "elevate" people by supporting culture that values education and sophistication. A "populist" or "lowbrow" view of culture says media should not try to "teach" but rather to entertain. The example on p. 393 of how the NY Times and the NYPost covered the NASA shuttle's return to flight is an excellent example of these two views of media and culture. Many scholars believe the two views of culture are merging, with "highbrow" programs such as Ken Burns' "The Civil War" becoming popular with all people and "lowbrow" programs, such as "The Bachelor," becoming popular with all people. Social Stability (p. 394) Media-Induced Ritual: There are media events that are a part of our lives. In class, we discussed several, including the Superbowl, which may or may not be a good football game, but which is a huge media ritual, in which people gather together to eat, watch the game, and wonder whether there will be a "wardrobe malfunction" at halftime. Media and Status Quo: Media companies are afraid to hurt their profits, so they take few chances. Programs usually portray the "status quo," or the way things are, rather than portraying things out of the ordinary. In class, we noted few gay or lesbian characters appeared on television until after most viewers were not disturbed by the characters. Media and Cognitive Dissonance:
