MODELS OF ABNORMALITY With such ways as to which the world may want to view a person, some may consider the normality of a person to be different amongst themselves. The development of discoveries and all those that science has to offer; we can look at the six different types of models of abnormality and the applications and treatments that attend to each of the abnormalities. These models include biological, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic-existential, sociocultural, multicultural, and developmental psychopathology perspectives. Through psychology, the six models of abnormality are identified, explained and can be demonstrated with the application and treatment of each. Biological Model The Biological Model, also as a medical perspective finds abnormal behavior from an illness through organism failure and its systems (Comer, 2014). It is with understanding as to the contents of having thoughts, emotions and most importantly, the behavior. Researchers look at the brain in order for them to find the underlying cause of the problem, but in the direction of psychological abnormalities. Biological theorists are able to trace back the psychological disorders by how the brain functions. There are many neurons and glia cells that make up the brain structures. Brain chemistry is when neurons send an electrical impulse to the nerve ending where a message is sent to another neuron. Problems within these structures of the brain can link as to how these psychological disorders came about (Comer, 2014). Take Huntington’s Disease for example. Huntington’s Disease is caused by the amount of basal ganglia and cortex cells lost in the brain. It gives a person the ability to have suicidal thoughts, emotional outbursts, and even loss of body movements (Comer, 2014). Treatment would involve drug therapy. This is where the person would be on psychotropic medications in which there are four major drug groups that were used during the therapy: antianxiety, antidepressant, antibipolar and antipsychotic drugs 2
MODELS OF ABNORMALITY (Comer, 2014). Though treatment can’t solve the disease, the medications can lessen the pain and symptoms of movements. It would give the person the ability to adapt to the changes made in their lifestyle (Frank, 2013). The biological model has an understanding as to some abnormal behaviors but not the answer to all. Psychodynamic Model The Psychodynamic Model is considered to be one of the oldest and famous type of models of abnormality. Many of the psychodynamic theorists believed that a person behaves, normal or abnormal, based off of psychological factors in which the person would have no idea about. They consider behavior comes from the basis of past experiences, like early childhood
