The differing ways in which these two texts deal with the issue of the inevitability of death is the focal point of the course. How this point is exploited is examined in the following works: Hemmingway's The Old Man and the Sea Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilych Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye Solzhenitzyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich Clark's Childhood's End The Books of Genesis, Ecclesiastes & Jonah Ridley Scott's film, Blade Runner Richard Lester’s film, Robin and Marian R EQUIRED T EXTBOOKS (A VAILABLE AT I OWA B OOK ) In addition to the five above-mentioned texts, students will need The Tanakh ; the Epic of Gilgamesh , edited by James Sanders; and the course guidebook (which contains a translation of The E'numa E'lish , an additional reading in the course)—all of which are available at Iowa Book.
