McAuliffe 1 Becca McAuliffe, Juliana Zeuch Robert Carr Astronomy Lab 19 September 2018 Sky Maps and the Celestial Sphere: Lab 1 The purpose of this lab was to understand the celestial sphere. We also learned how to use the celestial globe to find specific coordinates, stars, planets, and constellations. We were expected to learn the ways that the earth moves along with the stars, planets, and sun. We did this by locating and pinpointing stars to see whether they were in the north circumpolar, rising or setting, or never visible from a given location on Earth. The results from this lab varied greatly since there was so much to find. The main thing that we did was find stars on the celestial globe based off of coordinates that we were given. We would then figure out if they were in the north circumpolar and were always visible, if they raised and set (if they crossed the ecliptic), or if they were never visible. We did this for multiple locations such as Detroit, the North Pole, and a location on the equator. The results for each given star is located in the data tables as seen in the following pages.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
