The survival of our nation was in serious jeopardy. The Union army had suffered multiple defeats at the hands of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson who led the Southern armies. Lee’s army had invaded Maryland and was on the verge of threatening Washington. The British Parliament was openly discussing the possibility of recognizing the Confederacy as its own Nation. Northern Armies were downtrodden, and voters were weary of another defeat in battle. Lincoln was forced to shelf his emancipation proclamation while he waited for a victory that would give him the momentum he needed to be successful. The war was at a crossroads and all parties involved knew that the next battle would have an immeasurable impact on the War. That battle was the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862.
