Dhulian Pereira10/13/2014English 101Reseach Paper Genetically Modified Organism’s in our foodIn these modern times we live in, technology merely has taken over our lives in every aspect of life. Even the food we eat. Are we being lab rats for someone else’s experiments? Major cooperation’s claim that the uses of genetically modified organisms are good for the environment and human consumption. However there is not a lot of adequate testing of genetically modified organism’s and its outcomes on a lager period of time. However questions rise up weather the use of genetically modified organisms in food is safe or harmful towards for the human consumption. I argue that although genetically modified food would have certain advantages to it, the disadvantages of GMO’s outweigh advantages it claims to have.Genetically modified organisms in food are something one would find in mostly every type of food right now in the market and consuming it without even knowing it. According to Dr.Keith Kantor the author of GMO’s Pros and Cons explains “Usually they are modified either to further scientific research or to alter the food supply. Common genetic modifications include: adding antibacterial genes to plants, introducing genes that make the organism bigger or hardier, making new foods by adding genes from existing foods, and adding animal genes to plants and vice versa” (01). About how Genetically modified food is being made by altering genes of plantsand animals to create or produce food, for example including farming crops, medicine vaccine’s ,food ingredients , animal farms and so on. Genetically modified technology is mostly used on
farming crops, according to Dr George Amofah the author of Health implications of Genetically Modified Organisms states “As of August 2012, the United States of America Food and Drugs Administration has approved a total of 144 crops, including corn, soy, cotton, canola, potato, squash, squash and tomato, for commercialization” (03). Meaning almost every farmed crops arebeing genetically modified by the big cooperation’s. There are six major cooperation’s behind the genetically modified organism business which are Monsanto, DuPoint, Syngenta, Bayer Corp, Dow Chemicals and BASF, among these cooperation Monsanto corp, which is based America takes a prominent role. Alex Planes the author of Why Is Monsanto the Most Hated Company in the World, describers Monsanto Corp, as “Monsanto is scary because in the eyes of detractors, it's compressing 10,000 years of genetic adaptations into 10 years of mad science, as we now know them began just two decades ago, with an "enhanced" tomato that was so unprofitable to produce that its developer wound up selling itself to Monsanto” (01). Monsanto described as the mad scientist of GMO’s merely a profit driven organization that is overlooking potentially dangerous implications for human health which are in-ethically linked to moral and ethical concerns. Apart from GMO giants
