Gathering Data Observations of Language Use Listen to a person talking with someone. Count ten consecutive instances of the (ING) variable as defined. Keep running tally in our mind with the ration of G to N pronunciations Note down the tally, with the description of the situation Interview Explain the purpose of the study. Ask the person we are interviewing about his or her relationship with the addressee. Ask a question about their preference for one of the (ING) norms. Next question is “Which pronunciation do you use when you talk?” Ask “What kind of people say -IN frequently?”

Gathering Data Observations of Language Use Note down the tally, with the description of the situation, including the sex of the speaker, M (ale) or F(emale) ; the sex of the addressee m(ale) or f(emale), and the relationship between the speaker and addressee, FR(iend), FAM(ily), or O(ther). It would be better to make the count when we are not the addressee. Interview Ask a question about their preference for one of the (ING) norms. Then add “or have you no preference?” Indicate the answer as -ING, -IN, or n.p (no preference). Note down the results.
