Week 1 - Intro What do sport sociologists do?
The Decade Sport Sociology Emerged Two major organizations (NASSS and ISSA) started to “promote, stimulate, and encourage the sociological study of pay, games, sport and contemporary physical culture” in 1980 and 1965 respectively The Sociological Imagination Sociology is the scientific study of the connection between the individual and social structure Sociology examines the underlying patterns in human behavior and our relationships with one another C. Wright Mills (1959) coined the term the sociological imagination Macro vs Micro vs Global Approaches to Sociology Microstructures are intimate, face-face social interactions o Friends, family, work colleagues, teachers, coaches and how they influence society People participate in microstructures for personal reasons and because they “they to be emotionally deep and enduing” Example of a microstructure: o Child from a single-parent family who looks to his softball coach for guidance in dealing with problems he is experiencing at home Macrostructures are larger that microstructures and represent social relations that occur outside a persons inner circle Focusing on relationship of sport to institutions such as education, politics, and media Inequities in sport as a result of sex, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status 1
Global Structures , which are larger than macrostructures, are relations between nations, cultures, and societies o Eg.
