Report on The Color Purple (New York, 1985), May 24, 2007 The Color Purple tells the story of a young black girl growing up in the southern reconstruction. Celie writes letters to God and to her sister Nettie that depict the story of her life. Through these letters Celie reveals the sexual abuse she experienced from her father when her mother was sick and then eventually passed away. She is then sent by her father to be married to a man known throughout the novel as Mr._______. Now married and responsible for his children, Celie is not treated any better and is physically abused, getting beaten by her husband. Meanwhile, her sister Nettie runs away from home to move in with her and Mr.______. However, Mr._______ finds Nettie attractive and when she ignores this attraction, he kicks her out of the house. Nettie promises to write and keeps that promise but Mr._____ hides all of them before Celie knows about them. Nettie is taken in by a missionary couple and ends up in Africa with plans to Christianize the
