Mind Map Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) Epidemiology Older adults 65+ years old. Prevalence age > 70 = 9.7% Pathophysiology Exact cause unknown. Early onset FAD linked to 3 genes with mutation to chromosome 21 (APP14, PSEN1, PSEN2). Late onset AD related to chromosome 19 Sporadic late onset most common. Cellular pathology same for early and late onset. Pathologic alterations in brain. Diagnosis Diagnosis: complete H&P, rule out all manageable causes of dementia/delirium. Test for CBC, BMP, thyroid function, vitamin b12 levels, syphilis serology, lyme serology, HIV, UA, urine culture, heavy metal assays, sedimentation rate, and other vitamin levels (Copstead & Banasik, 2010).
