The Mid-Atlantic Colonies & the Columbian Exchange I. The Mid-Atlantic Settlements A. New York (1624) - Began as dutch colony - Henry Hudson commissioned to find northwest passage. - Claims land for dutch. - Paid Indians for land instead of conquering land. 1. New Netherlands (Dutch) – Belgians, Spanish, Africans - Splits up English colonies of Penn. and Mass. Henry Hudson – commissioned to find northwest passage. New Amsterdam (NYC) - trade furs with Iroquois Indians 2. England Takes Over (1664) - King grants brother the land of New Amsterdam. - Dutch surrender w/o firing a shot - renamed after the Duke of York – New York City - giving away land called Head right- 50 acres for every head ( including servants). - Duke of York allows religious toleration and elect own assembly. ( attract settlers) - divides present day Jersey and gives it to two of his supporters. B. New Jersey (1702) – proprietary colony - united two Jerseys and became Royal Colony in 1702.
