England Takes Over (1664)- King grants brother the land of New Amsterdam.- Dutch surrender w/o firing a shot- renamed after the Duke of York – New York City- giving away land called Head right- 50 acres for every head ( including servants).- Duke of York allows religious toleration and elect own assembly. ( attract settlers) - divides present day Jersey and gives it to two of his supporters. B. New Jersey (1702) – proprietary colony- united two Jerseys and became Royal Colony in 1702.
