INVESTMENTS BUS 423, Fall 2018 Instructor: Dr. Francisco Barillas Email: [email protected] Office: 510, GBS Office Hours: By appointment TA: Cong (Roman) Wong Email: [email protected] Course Objectives The objective of this course is to prepare you to work in the areas of portfolio management, stock research and investment banking. The course is designed to improve your understanding of the fundamental concepts of security investments. The course will primarily focus on security analysis and management of stock portfolios. We will also cover fundamentals of fixed-income securities and equity options. Reading material Selected articles related to material covered in class will be posted on Canvas. Textbook ( not required ): Investments , Zvi Bodie, Alex Kane, and Alan Marcus, tenth edition, McGraw-Hill Irwin Publishing (ISBN: 0077861671 ). (BKM). Editions 7 th 8 th and 9 th of this book are also acceptable. The book is not required and can serve as a reference to some of the material covered in class. Note that I do not follow the book. Course Information and Approach I expect that you come to class ready and enthusiastic to learn and prepared to interact with your fellow classmates. Class participation is an integral part of your evaluation and will account for 10 per cent of your final grade. It is helpful that you display your name tags at all times, as I would like to get to know you. Also, you are expected to arrive on time and not to leave before the end of class. The use of phones, tablets and laptops is highly discouraged during class as it could be disrupting for the rest of the class. If you would like to use your laptop to take notes please let me know in advance. Part of the process of becoming a good financial analyst is to keep abreast with current events. Students should make a habit of keeping up with major events involving asset markets. Excellent sources of timely stock market news include the Money & Investing and Business & Finance sections of The Wall Street Journal , CNBC television, and Yahoo Finance, among many others.
