Hampton 1 Meghan Hampton Dr. McMahand English 1102-24 3 March 2014 Lives facing Economic Determinism in Brad Sewell’s “If It Was You Instead of Me” Cycles of poverty occurs every day and despite how much individuals want things to change, their economic status hardly ever will. In “If It Was You Instead of Me,” Brad Sewell merges fate and class in the lives of two characters while developing the economic downturn of their lives. Of these two characters, Paul is in the mainstream and Greg Macowski is the outsider also known as the “Lake Rat.” Paul automatically has an upper hand for not fitting into the group-think category. However, the use of symbols depicts a reversal of fortune and shows the audience the shifts of their lives using economic determinism. The lakefront shows the shifts of Paul and Greg lives. Everyone knew what kind of people stayed there but living at the lakefront was beyond Greg’s control. Greg and Paul wanted more than what they grew up with, but the poor only gets poorer. Paul states, “The lakefront had changed. The huge steel mills were dying and, with them, a way of life” (115). The factories
