Milestone Three The actions of the Confederates took against the Union in seceding, they formed the Confederate States of America, and when President Lincoln sent ships to Fort Sumter in an effort to send supplies, the Confederates wen to Fort Sumter and demanded their "unconditional surrender" prior to the supply ships arriving, the commanding officer refused, the Confederates attacked the fort. The actions that led to war, "was a clash between a society of that relied on "free" wage labor, and that depended on the labor of enslaved African Americans." (Brady) When Abraham Lincoln was voted into office as President of the United States, at that point “seven states in the lower South had already formed a the Confederate States of America, and the threat of more secessions remained.”(Hewitt & Lawson) Once President Lincoln was inaugurated, “legislators in the Upper South hoped a compromise could be reached.”(Hewitt &
