NURS 6521 Week 6 Discussion Fibromyalgia Over 7 million Americans are affected by fibromyalgia, and there is no known direct cause or cure (Bell et al., 2018). Often patients find it difficult to explain specific events that participate symptoms which are why it is a difficult disorder to treat. Unfortunately, my wife knows the symptoms of this disease all too well. Fibromyalgia can present with symptoms as widespread pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulties, migraines, irritable bowel, stiffness and achiness, hypersensitivity to cold or heat, abdominal pain, sensations of numbness and tingling of hands and feet, along with anxiety and depression (Wentz, 2014). It can make the patient feel helpless due to the vagueness and multitude of symptoms experienced, which can perplex most clinicians. Patients may start to think it is all “in their heads” and can become depressed when finding a clinical diagnosis escapes their health care provider. The American College of Rheumatology created diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia which includes a history of widespread pain and pain on palpation in at least 11 of 18 tender points (Wentz, 2014).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
