Running Header: Week 2 Assignment2Film CritiqueSince the 1900’s film has been around to help viewers experience a new formof escape from their own world. Throughout the years film has evolved to what it istoday. In order for film to improve directors, editors, actors, and many other peoplehad to learn to flourish and sharpen their skill in film. In order to give the audience abelievable feel to their films they had to learn the secrets to the film industry. Wheneveryone does their part and works as a team to create the best film they could theygenerated incredible films. Films often influence emotions and thoughts of theirviews and the more relatable a film is to one, the more viewers will appreciate it.There are different theories to what really makes a film great. There’s theformalist approach which tends to “Focus on plot structure, the limitations andsignificance of the setting, the use of mise en scène to establish character and moodand to advance the plot, the camera, editing, and sound techniques that heightenviewer involvement.” (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. 2014). Then there is theauteurist theory which “takes for granted that a film's interpretation goes beyond thatindividual film and can be better understood by knowing what else the same director hasdone.”(Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. 2014). Last but not least there’s the genericapproach that “treats a film as one of many within a genre, trying to interpret meaning bylooking at recurring symbolic motifs, character types, plot formulas, visual styles, andanything else common to films with the same genre.”(Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P.2014). The theory I feel my film fell under was the generic theory. Although all these
Running Header: Week 2 Assignment3theories give more credit to one thing than the other they must all still work together andhave a common goal in order to create an amazing film.Alienis a blockbuster film that came out in 1979. It was directed by Ridley Scottand featured Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton,John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto. This film falls under the science fiction genrewith a subgenre of suspense. For the movieAliento meet the criteria for science fiction itmust be a “film dealing with realistically reasoned speculation about future events orscientific theories” (Goodykoontz B., & Jacobs, 2014). In other words it’s something thatis possible but may not have been discovered or attempted yet. The movieAlientookplace on a shuttle in outer space. Can we fly shuttles in space? Yes. Can we sustain lifefor a certain time in space? Yes. Are there other species out in the universe aside fromhumans? Possibly. Can robots look, speak, and feel like humans? Not yet. Do you seehow not everything in the movie was real but in some ways can someday become thenorm? That is what makes this movie science fiction.
