1 On 7 January 2018, Oprah Winfrey, an actress, talk show host, and philanthropist, became the first African American woman to win the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award. She used the occasion and her acceptance speech to repudiate racial injustice, sexual abuse against women and attacks against the press. Winfrey’s speech starts with an anecdote of her childhood, “In 1964, I was a little girl sitting on the linoleum floor of my mother’s house in Milwaukee watching Anne Bancroft present the Oscar for best actor at the 36th Academy Awards. She opened the envelope and said five words that literally made history: “The winner is Sidney Poitier.” Up to the stage came the most elegant man I had ever seen. I remember his tie was white, and of course, his skin was black, and I had never seen a black man being celebrated like that.” She paints a very detailed image of her as a child watching the 36th Academy Awards as Sidney Poitier accepted his award. This anecdote not only uses pathos to capture the audience’s attention, but it also appeals directly to her audience. She also uses poetic juxtaposition to balance the image of the white tie and the black man. By using the contrast, it emphasizes the weight of that momentous occasion. It was the first time a black man was celebrated in such a public way by the broader white culture. She also sensibly concludes the story that began in 1964 in the latter half of the speech by stating,
