Worldedness within the False Utopian
World building is the process of constructing an imaginary world, sometimes associated
with a whole fictional universe. World building often involves the creation of maps, a backstory,
and people for the world. Constructing worlds can enrich the backstory and create a picture in
the works, and it is not uncommon for authors to revise their constructed world while completing
its associated work. World construction can be fabricated for personal amusement and mental
exercise, or for specific creative endeavors such as novels, video games, or role-playing games.
Eric Hayot defines worldedness in “On Literary Words,” as including a novum, amplitude,
character system, connectedness, metadiegetic structure, connectedness, and world reduction.
The novum is distinctive and creating an understanding the imagine a world is different from our
own, by means of scientific observation, theorizing, and empirical experiment. Amplitude is the
foreground and background information. Character system is the way of assessing the
importance of characters within a story. Metadiegetic structure is the relationship that creates
meaning for the component parts of the story. Fredric Jameson defines connectedness as being,
on the outside; is culture, history, and literature. Within the text, connectedness, is settings
characters, and actions that make the plot. Last, but not least, world reduction... this is where the
world is entirely planned out, nothing is random leaving out certain details about the world to
help create it. Furthermore, utopia is an imagined community or society that possesses highly
desirable or nearly perfect quality sport citizens. But, Utopia isn’t necessarily this generalized
idea we all have of this perfect world. “Utopia is to build a better place–– an imaginary or

different world in which we live.” The opposite of a utopia is a dystopia. A dystopia is a
community or society that is in some important wat undesirable or frightening. Dystopias are
often characterized by dehumanization, totalitarian governments, environmental disaster, or
something else associated with a cataclysmic decline in society. Authors such as, Lyman Tower
Sargent in “The Three Faces of Utopianism Revisited,” Raymond Williams in “Utopia and
Science Fiction,” Eric Hayot in “On literary Words,” and Fredric Jameson in “World Reduction
in Le Guin: The Emergence of Utopian Narrative,” have depicted Utopianism. In this essay, I
will depict the worldedness found in the book The Giver, by Lois Lowery in comparison to
Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury, and these three critics writings as well.
Worldedness is exemplified immensely as the world they live in has been created. The
Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel. It is set in the society which at first
