Naomi Rodriguez February 21, 2018 Wells Period B What Lies After Death Death has usually been perceived as a severe punishment, the worst nightmare, and a great fear of the unknown-but is it really as bad as it seems? No one knows if death is just the final stage of our biological existence or a passage to keep souls existing and travel to the afterlife. In Greek and Roman mythology, death is part of the cycle of life. In other religions, it is said that after death the soul is judged by what they had done throughout their mortal existence to be taken to either Heaven or Hell. Since there is no clear explanation for the possibility of where the conscience and soul go after death there are clues derived from Greek & Roman Mythology and religions such as Christianity and Buddhism. Although there are a variety of beliefs of where the human souls go, the most science and folklore can provide is that there is a strong belief in an afterlife which would give purpose to the existence to the human soul. In the ancient times of 2000 BC, the Greeks and Romans believed there is a continuation of life after death for the soul in which it travels to the Underworld as part of the cycle of life. The Underworld, at the time, served as an answer to the question of is their life after death to the uneducated people. It was said that the soul is carried to the entrance of the Underworld by Hermes, a Greek God that leads souls immediately after death to the entrance of the Underworld. Then the so would be judged and sent to either rest in the Elysium Field or suffer in the pits of Tartarus depending on what the person did throughout their mortal lifetime. Because of this belief at the time, it gave people a set of morals on how to behave in society so that their soul
