Intro Regions are user-defined Where ever you are, you are in a state State are the internationally accepted norm for dividing up the planet State of states Sovereign States- distinct geographic areas that have been politically and legally defined owned and operated by the government Places that are not sovereign states have some sort of international treaty Antarctica- divided up US is one of the oldest sovereign states China, Iran, many European countries Most of the planet is very young (100 years), in terms of sovereign states Most of Africa, USSR Sovereign states are a relatively new concept Before sovereign states, people were identified with other people (ethnicity) People in these groups all had leaders Sovereign rulers- ruled over the people, not the territory Now everything is tied to territory State - what we call country; legally defined territory that has been recognized by other states 193 sovereign states in the world Nation - a group of people who share a common culture Unlimited number of them Cherokee, Aztecs, Zulu, Scots, Persians, Mongolians, Kurds, French, Germans, Japanese, Koreans Nation-State- group of people who share a common culture and rule themselves in a defined political area Germany, France, Dutch, Belgium, Italians, Spaniards, the rest of Europe, Iran, China, Japan, Korea Term was invented by the Europeans Every state is not a nation-state United States, India, Sudan US is not always called a sovereign state Common culture of ideas, personal freedoms liberties human rights, free market, capitalism Places with conflict inside them are not nation states We can have nations without states Basque of Northern Spain, Kurds across Middle East, Abkhazians in Georgia, Palestinians in Israel, Kosovo in Serbia, Sovereign states NEVER willingly give up territory Because you never know what that territory holds and can’t predict political situations later (they might attack you) Speaking of Sovereignty Sovereignty - The quality of having Supreme independent authority over a territory No one can supercede the actions of the sovereign state The only way to get sovereignty is to kill your own citizens If you can do something this bad, you are a sovereign state capital punishment

All sovereign states respect other sovereign states so they can be respected themselves State sovereignty is a European phenomenon and is fairly new (3,4,500 years) Individual people (such as monarchs) were bestowed sovereign power over their stretch of turf Reinforced by a blessing of God, holy relic, holy sword Passed down for generations and crowned by the pope Divine Right of King or Mandate of Heaven From ultimate power (God) there is no question Shift 1- Rule over people to rule over places People were at war all the time in Europe, so lines were written to show the kingdoms Nation-state
