Every state has its own legislative code regulating the practice of medicine, which requires all physicians to adhere to standard of care. Therefore, if a nurse practitioner chooses to treat a family member or friend, they must comply with the same standards as always. This would include fully documenting the medical exam, making medical decisions, and ordering any necessary tests. Making it a habit to prescribe, distribute, or give any controlled substance to oneself, family members, or friends, except in an emergency, is considered unprofessional and enough grounds for disciplinary action (Gagan, 2018). Therefore, if you have previously conducted an evaluation or keep medical records of a family member or friend, it is not legal in certain states to prescribe sedative hypnotics, anxiolytics, or narcotics to yourself, a friend, or family members outside of an emergency.
