Case Scenario 1 Post an explanation of the ethical and legal implications of the scenario you selected on all stakeholders involved such as the prescriber, pharmacist, patient, and the patient’s family. The case I would like to discuss for this week discussion is the first scenario, in which the nurse prescribed incorrect medication to a 5-year-old patient. She prescribe a dose suitable for an adult. This is a case of medication error. Medication errors are a serious problem in the world and one of the most common medical errors that threaten patient safety and in cases patient may even due to medication error (Gorgich, et al., 2016). Most of the most important and vital component of nursing care is giving the correct drug to the patient and nurses must have the knowledge and skills to correctly prescribe and administer medication to the patients. Medication errors can lead to undesirable consequences for patients including increased length of stay in the hospital, increased costs of hospitalization, severe injury or they can even cause death of the patient (Gorgich, et al., 2016). The case reveal that patient is a 5-year-old and nurse prescribe medication dose of suitable for adult patient. There are several legal and ethical implications for the nurse who committed this mistake. This is because children have a different pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics for a drug depending upon their age and body weight and prescribing a dose that is suitable for adults can result in severe side effects and serious physiological and psychological dis-functioning. The drug may lead to toxicity or damage internal organs of the child’s body.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
