This week’s reading centers around the sociological perspective while examiningsociology’s origins, its perspectives, and sociological research. Sociology looks atunderstanding human behavior and seeing how people are influenced by their society.Numerous factors, such as one’s race, gender, income, and education, influence the manner inwhich people behave. Growing up as a well-off, American female has shaped how I act, how Ifeel about myself, and what I want in life, for example. I have access to a quality education thatwill prepare me to enter the workforce in the future; and I want to get married and start a familyof my own down the road. A female growing up in another setting, say in the jungles of SouthAmerica (as the book puts forth), would have entirely different motivators and desires. As thebook explains, the society in which an individual grows up in shapes what he does and how hethinks, as well as his particular location within that society.Pressing questions about social life emerged during the time of the Industrial Revolution, when people began to shift from their traditional lives and new perspectives came about.
