Why African Slaves instead of Indian Slaves? • Indian slavery was banned in Spanish Colonial America in 1542 by King Charles V • Indians slaves were replaced by slaves from Africa • Slaves were expensive and only the wealthy could afford them. • Many Spanish soldiers would rather be paid in licenses for slaves than in actual currency
