In the reading “Threats and Temps”, Naomi Klein represented the dominant change in the labor force because of the rise of neoliberal capitalism. Labor exploitation became a relatively common issue in different industries. Specifically, an increasing number of multinational retailers and restaurants chose to employ part-time workers, instead of full-time workers. There were several advantages associated with the employment of part time workers for large chains. Through employing part-time workers, corporations could pay the minimum wage and avoid paying various benefits, including vacation, insurance, and retirement benefits. This particular shift in employment patterns in the retail and service sector enabled these corporations to save the cost and raise the profit significantly. In the meantime, companies could effectively prevent the unionization, strike, and demonstration by employing part-time workers.
