354 – Human Resources Management Selection Part 1 - Have a couple of quizzes and a smart book due the 15 th of October - Today, starting to talk about selection - Next class continue talking about selection – more focus on interviews - Then, we’ll go over the big picture of what we’ve been talking about and how the topics are inter related Agenda - Three steps for effective selection - Reliability and validity - Choosing a selection measure - Legal and ethical issues in selection Selection is one of the most important things HR people do in an organization – it comes down to one moment and one decision – where you need to choose one applicant over a pool of applicants – these decisions can have lasting implications. If you select the wrong employee, it can be bad for other employees. This can be very costly – the cost of a bad hire is approximately equal to 1 to 2 times a bad employees yearly salary – a lot of people make bad hiring decisions or they get lucky. Very few people seem to know the secret to effective hiring. The people who came up with the science aren’t necessarily out there making the decisions. Example – Moneyball – people were selecting players for the wrong characteristics – implementing a statistical model led to a winning strategy – radical theory to select people by getting on base – which is what leads to scoring. People thought they knew how to select baseball players, but they didn’t stop to collect the data to figure out if they were doing the right thing or not We’ve known how to assess people for over 100 years, and there’s been a lot of progress in order to use useful measures of if someone will be a good performer or not – but no one wants to read the dusty articles. When you google employee selection, there’s many articles about the best way to do it. None of these are correct, and none have taken the time to access the theory to figure out if they’re actually right.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
