WORLD OF STATES 3.2: The State of States Earth has been divided up into distinct geographic areas that have been politically and legally defined as independent sovereign states. Sovereign State – owned and operated by the government of those places (concept is new). o EXAMPLE: Antarctica Huge Not a state Every place on planet Earth is kind of in this sovereign state system, even those that aren’t. Sovereign States that were independent since: Before 1800 (Purple) – oldest states o They have continuous lineage before 1800 being an independent sovereign state o USA – one of the youngest states, but the oldest S.S Old S.S: o China o Iran o European countries Thought up the whole concept of S.S Most of Africa at the old USSR, most of the places are 50 or 60 years old or much younger. For most of human history, people would have first identified themselves with a group of other people, not a territory. Kings, monarchs, emperors were the leaders of sovereign ruler, or sovereign of the peoples, not a place. Everything is tied to territory. The term state = country Legally defined territory that has been recognized by other states There are 193 states on Earth right now. Nation – group of people who share a common culture o Unlimited numbers EXAMPLE: Cherokee, Native American nation of folks Aztec, who led Mexico several hundred years ago Zulu, tribes in Africa

Scots in Scotland Persians in Iran Nation-State – group of people who share a common culture and rule themselves in a defined political area o EXAMPLE: Europe Iran China Japan Korea (best example) because it’s 100% ethnically, culturally Korean people. Is every state a nation-state? o Not really Is US a nation-state? Is there a common culture, a group of people with a shared common culture? Everybody speak the same language? Religion? Ethnic group? o No EXAMPLE: India that don’t fit in the “Nation-State” category - Multicultural - Multi-religious - Multi-ethnic societies Sudan in South Africa has a very distinct two-nation status inside of a state - North are Arabic or Islamic religion - South is black African Christian animist 2011 update!
