1.0 Intro to Conflict/Cooperation States are working together like never before This is a product of just the last 60 to 70 years. These groups of states working together are referred to as supranationalism organizations Supra in Latin = across Nationalists = nations Over and above and supersede simple state boundaries Money or security or commonality EU AU UN NATO NAFTA APEC OPEC
These groups affect today’s world much more so than individuals’ states do anymore, and that’s important to consider Nature of Conflict has morphed significantly in the Modern Era - How wares are conducted and who is conducting them 2.0 The Changing Nature of Cooperation We are living through the age of international organizations They did not exist 100 years ago, much less 1,000 or 10,000 ago New phenomena Why now? Why are these international organizations gaining in popularity? And in number? - By numbers there are more supranationalist organizations than ever before and more states are joining them than ever before. - He personally believe that these organizations will soon supersede the S.S concept in their entirety perhaps in the next 100 years maybe even sooner Trends of the last 60 to 70 years: - All states are in at least one or two or five of these organizations now - Gaining in popularity and as more and more states to join these entities End of WWII (1945) – Start of Supranationalist Organizations Many of them just in the last 20 to 30 years The 20 th century really gets a page turned on all of this because of the absolute epic scale of death and destruction that humanity brought on itself during the 1900s. It was that the technology of humanity had increased so much that they could kill each other way better than ever before with more and more lethal devices - Biological devices - Atomic and nuclear devices One dude with a nuclear bomb dropping over Hiroshima, wiping out 100,000 League of Nations was formed in 1919 - Didn’t work out that well because the US didn’t care - This whole idea of this organization was new The world had to wait around for WWII to come about with even greater death and destruction before even the US and pretty much everybody was scared UN formed in 1945 – mostly to have states sitting around a table together to try to head off future conflicts. Stabilize the world, peace, love and all that happy horseshit.
Why is it important to recognize that the rise of supranationalist organizations started at post-WWII?
