Option 1: Uniting the Nation: Economic Growth2Option 1: Uniting the Nation: Economic GrowthWith the passing of time, American began to grow and prosper between the years 1790 and 1860. There was a huge amount of growth in the economy in the US and this can be attributed to several main causes; improvements in transportation, changes in agricultural production, and better methods of communication. Transportation made a huge leap by way of the introduction of the locomotive. John Stevens, who is considered the father of railroads in America, helped to build the first steam run railway systems in the US. In 1830, the first steam train was build and run on a common-carrier railroad. The Best Friend of Charleston was designed for the South Carolina Railroad Company. (Karwatka, 2003). Railroads were a cheaper way to move people and freight farther and faster than boats or wagons. Trains also heldthe added bonus of the ability to function in freezing temperatures, where boats could not be used if the water was frozen. (Shi, 2016).
