MORAL DILEMMAS AND ETHICAL2IntroductionNurses are faced with ethical dilemmas every day with unique situations that require split-second decisions. These situations require the nurse to set aside their own beliefs and values to make ethical decisions for the care of their patients. For each and every one of us as nurses take an oath in following a code of ethics that gives an outline for your responsibility and accountability based on standards in patient care.Working as a nurse in the emergency room gives rise to ethical dilemmas. Due to time restraints and the patient's cognitive impairment and lack of medical history, complications can and do occur. The nurse has very little time to get detailed patient information. The nurse must make quick assessments and act quickly based on hospital protocol. The organized chaos of the emergency room presents unique ethical challengesand for that reason, I have been asked to discuss with you triage procedures and best practice based on an occurrence in our community involving two patients that presented to the hospital with similar injuries of inhalation. I would like to review some health care policies and protocols while following triage guidelines and health care disparities. I would also like to discuss some moral and ethical challenges we encounter and answer any questions that might arise with the discussion of these subjects.Healthcare Policies and ProtocolsLet’s discuss some of our policies and protocols based on triage in the emergency department. In an emergency department, the nurses rely on a triage system to evaluate and categorize the sick and wounded when insufficient resources are available to cope with an overcrowded department. In the cases of Frank Jeffersand Brent Damascus,the nurses had to make a decision on which to help first based on the most urgent case. The nurses in the emergency department are aware of triage and adverse consequences and follow protocols based
