English 10 ADV. PIB-A “The Pit and the Pendulum” OBJ The story starts with the narrator discovering he has been sentenced to death. Upon hearing this, he faints and later wakes up in the dark. He is frightened because he figures that he would have been sentenced to death by auto-da-fé, which is common with prisoners during the Spanish Inquisition. He wonders if he has been locked in a tomb, but he gets up and walks a little, and soon him believes that he is not in a tomb but perhaps in a dungeon in Toledo. He tears a piece of his garment and puts it against the wall so that he can count the number of steps in order to walk all the way around wherever he is. Before too long, he falls and soon goes to sleep on the ground. When he wakes up he sees some water and bread, which he immediately eats. He decides to walk across the room. But as he crosses, the piece of cloth that he ripped earlier gets tangled and trips him. He falls down, and when he looks down, he realizes that his face has fallen over the edge of a pit, and he is very close to it. He throws a rock to try and determine the depth of it,
