Majority Groups o White, Anglo-Saxon (Protestant) WASP Minority Groups o Africans, Native Americans, Mexicans, Chinese (vast majority on west coast), Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indian, Filipino, Irish, Italians, Germans, other European o At one point had minority group statuses; had limited resources; there status upon arrival was minority Asian American Dreams o It was very difficult to create a pan Asian unity o They came together for the Vincent Chin case Ended up being a rally cry among Asians Joining groups gives you a bigger voice and bigger numbers Groups who were not voluntary immigrants have a harder time making it in US society generationally o Voluntary immigrants have a proactive reason for being here: jobs, education, etc Majority wanted minorities in country because of cheap labor jobs Competing resources o Jobs, houses, education, land Unequal power o If you are the group making the rules and if you are a society who lives by the rules then the rules are going to favor your group; any group that’s not your group
