A Close Look 2 Thesis Statement In “The Road Not Taken”, from the title to the final stanza, Robert Frost creates an image of a fork in the road that symbolizes life’s journey and the point at which one must make a decision. Outline 1) Meaning of the title- does it stand for the road less traveled that the narrator mentions, or the road the narrator did not take. 2) First stanza a. Overall image- a road in the woods in autumn that splits into 2 b. Symbolism i. The road itself=life’s journey ii. The fork in the road=a decision iii. The narrator’s long consideration of each road=taking time to make a thoughtful decision about an important choice iv. The bend in the road=uncertainty of the future 3) Second stanza a. Images- the roads are grassy and each show the same amount of wear b. Symbolism i. Amount of wear on the road=each choice is similar ii. Narrator chose a path=making a decision in life 4) Third stanza a. Image- the roads are also covered in leaves (another clue that it’s autumn) b. Symbols i.
