7. a) Primary Territory – A personal territory that allows an individual almost complete control over social interaction. In terms of a hospital, this would be the portion of a patient’s room that is partitioned off from anyone else in the room and allows for maximum privacy. Secondary (group) Territory – This is the territory that acts as a mediator for an individual from being in a primary territory to a public territory. It is a group setting and is more open to social interaction than primary territory, but at the same time allows for more control over social interaction than public territory. In a hospital setting, secondary territory would be a TV room for the patients of a specific wing of the hospital. Public Territory – This territory is where an individual is least able to regulate social interaction. An example in a hospital would be the waiting room, where all patients must congregate and interact. b) In terms of a hospital, the portion of a patient’s room that is partitioned off from anyone else in the room and allows for maximum privacy would be considered primary territory. This is so because it is private in the sense that, within the hospital, the individual has the most amount of access and the least amount of exposure to others in the hospital that he will achieve. In a hospital setting, secondary territory would be a TV room for the patients of a specific wing of the hospital. This room would be considered a secondary territory because it is available to a group of people that will inevitably share the space, but is not so open that anyone that wishes to use it can.
