READER’S JOURNAL: RHTYM AND METER IN POETRY2How does rhythm and meter contribute to the meaning of this poem? How does rhythm and meter contribute to your enjoyment of this poem? What would the poem be like if it were exactly the same, but lacked the rhythmic elements? Why do so many poets choose to use rhythmic elements in their poems? What is itabout our culture that appreciates and demands rhythm to poetry? In poetry, the words, rhythm and meter are inseparable. The rhythm of the poem helpsbring together the reader to the meaning of the words. The words and rhythm create a sense of eagerness. The rhythmic lines are like waves in the sea. I think of rhythm as a flow and meter is a way of measuring the flow. Some say that dancers and poets have a lot in common. They both need to have a rhythm and flow, and without these elements, the dance routine is not graceful, and a poem would read as boring and unusual.
