Geoff Martindale Tuesday 1:00 Lab MASC 110L Lab #5 Objective: The objective of this lab is to understand the chemical structures of ionic solids taking into account their relative radii. Also the three types of ionic solids and their structures. Theory: This experiment includes some basic concepts of ionic solid structures. In an ionic solid crystal, cation and anion may have different size. The larger ions, which are usually the anions, are arranged in either a close packed (FCC or HCP) or simple cubic array. The smaller ions occupy the tetrahedral or octahedral holes in the close packed array or cubic holes in the cubic array. In this experiment, we learned a simple way to pack the small ions in these holes. Results: NaCl. Na: Grey. Cl: Green. Radius ratio (r C /r A ) Holes the smaller ions occupy Coordination number 0.225-0.414 tetrahedral hole 4 0.414-0.732 octahedral hole 6 0.732-1 cubic hole 8
