WU, F18, N6512, Wk.3, initial post For this week’s discussion I have chosen the overweight 5-year-old with overweight parents. Possible Health Issues and Risks Childhood obesity has become a major public health problem in the United States (Ball, Dains, Flynn, Solomon, & Stewart, 2015). Kids are more involved in video games and watching TV instead of being outside playing a sport. Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States putting kids at risk for poor health. According to Kelsey, Zaepfel, Bjornstad, and Nadeau (2014), there are many health issues that are related to obesity in children such as; metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea, asthma, and several other problems. Overweight adults are all at risk for these additional health problems so why wouldn’t the same go for children that are overweight? Diabetes type 2 used to be an “adult” problem but it is being seen more in young children and adolescents that are overweight (Faguy, 2016).
