Geoff Martindale Tuesday 1:00 Lab MASC 110L Lab #8 Objective: The objective of this lab is to assess the hardness of various metals and determine how it characterizes some mechanical properties of each metal using the Rockwell hardness test. Also, to see what affect heat treating a metal has on its hardness. Theory: For this lab we used the Rockwell hardness test with a 1/16 inch spherical ball penetrator. When the metal is initially placed on the machine, the base is adjusted until a minor load is applied to the test metal equivalent to 10 kgf. Then when the depressor bar is pushed, a major load will be smoothly applied to the metal. After the major load has finished depressing the penetrator, it is removed to find the difference between the major and minor load and the difference is automatically calculated and incorporated directly into the scale. The Rockwell number then can be read directly from the dial indicator along with the appropriate scale, in the case, the B scale. Results:
