Notes 1/25/08 Day 2- Soils as Natural Bodies 1. Four Principal Components of Soil (% are by volume) a. Air 25% b. Water 25% c. Minerals 45% d. Organic matter (OM) 5% 2. 5 soil forming factors a. Soil = is dynamic natural body having properties due to the combined effects of: i. Active Factors: (active factors do the most work) 1. Climate – the weathering 2. Biota - All living things ii. Modifying factors: 1. Relief – where you are on the land 2. Time – variable that allows things to happen iii. Passive factor: 1. Parent material – what was there already 3. Functions of the soil a. Medium for plant growth i. Nutrients ii. Support iii. Water iv. Oxygen b. Regulates water flow c. Habitat for soil organisms d. Recycler of materials i. Fact: in one gram of soil there is between 1 and 2 million micro- organisms. ii. Soil contains nutrients for the plants 1. plants ether decay and return to the soil 2. or are eaten by animals and the waste and the dead animal is returned to the soil e. Engineering medium
