PHOTOSYNTHESIS INTRODUCTION 1. Give the Greek root word meaning for photoautotroph . “Photo” – light, “auto” – self, and “troph” – nutrition. -Plants, algae, and some bacteria have the ability to use sunlight to generate their own storage molecules of energy. 2.What was von Helmont testing with his willow tree experiment? Describe the experiment used by Joseph Priestly to discover oxygen. - Priestly believed that air was not a single “elementary substance”, but a “composition” of gases. - He placed a candle in a sealed jar to discover that it would extinguish, and he called the air “injured” (it was unable to support fire). - He placed a mouse in the jar to see the same effect, and it would die. - Priestly had discovered “oxygen”. 5.List the primary constituents of air.
