Japan 3 Transcript (Bad Blood of War) 00:00 let's delve a little deeper into this 00:02 bad blood of war because we really can't 00:05 understand the relations between Japan 00:08 and many of its Asian neighbors in 00:10 today's world without understanding not 00:13 just the times dates and places of 00:17 Japanese imperial expansion but really 00:20 the depths the absolute horrific depths 00:23 that the Japanese military went to 00:25 during this phase of aggression so nasty 00:29 in fact cost so much bad blood that we 00:32 can still see this animosity and 00:34 friction manifesting itself in today's 00:36 world so we really do need to flush out 00:39 a bit more detail maybe slightly 00:41 offensive just some of my Japanese 00:43 friends or Korean or Chinese friends or 00:45 even my delicate American friends but 00:47 you kind of got to know this stuff to 00:49 get it and that's what we're all about 00:50 let's start with the bad blood in Korea 00:54 1895 the Japanese invade the Korean 00:57 Peninsula during the sino-japanese war
00:59 they take over the Korean Peninsula 01:01 parts of Manchuria and Taiwan they strip 01:03 away from China now that's bad enough 01:05 for China to lose territory but it's way 01:07 worse for the Koreans because from 1895 01:10 to the end of World War two in 1945 01:13 Korea is in essence a slave state and 01:17 there's no nice way to say this it's a 01:20 slave state the Korean population is put 01:23 to work in the salt mines in the coal 01:25 mines and the steel mills all in an 01:27 effort to prop up and supply the 01:29 Japanese war machine on top of that the 01:32 Japanese military really comes in and 01:33 crushes the Korean culture as much as 01:35 possible getting rid of Korean textbooks 01:38 getting rid of Korean history books 01:40 making Korean people assume Japanese 01:42 names I mean its bordering on genocide 01:44 it's pretty nasty business 01:45 but even that pales in comparison to 01:48 what's going to happen to China not only 01:50 do they lose territory in the 1895 01:52 sino-japanese war but of course in 1900
01:55 the Japanese help the Western powers 01:57 suppress the uprising in China during 02:00 the Boxer Rebellion but it really gets 02:03 bad for China in 1937 when Japan is now 02:07 fully equipped to prepare to invade and 02:09 take over China in its entirety 02:12 this period from 1937 to 1945 the end of 02:17 World War two is absolutely horrific and 02:21 destructive for the Chinese and they 02:25 have not forgotten this period in 02:26 particular the launch of this Japanese 02:29 campaign started with something now 02:31 referred to as The Rape of Nanking a 02:33 major city of millions in China that 02:37 when the Japanese army invading army 02:40 came and took over they had perhaps ten 02:42 twenty thirty thousand troops and they 02:44 easily rolled in and took over but then 02:47 they had to control a city of millions 02:48 and how does a a group of ten or twenty 02:50 or thirty thousand folks control a city 02:52 of millions 02:53 the Japanese answer was a complete utter 02:55 death and destruction just kill
