The process involves the following two reactions (1) Methane reacts with steam to produce hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas. CH 4 (g) + H 2 O(g) ⎯→ CO(g) + 3 H 2 (g) H 4 D (C H) + 2 D (O H) [ D (C O) + 3 D (H H)] = +198 kJ H = ( 110.5) [( 74.8) + ( 241.8)] = +206.2 kJ (2) Carbon monoxide reacts with excess steam to produce hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide. CO(g) + H 2 O(g) ⎯→ CO 2 (g) + H 2 (g) H D (C O) + 2 D (O H) [2 D (C=O) + D (H H)] = 36 kJ H = ( 393.5) [( 110.5) + ( 241.8)] = 41.2 kJ (a) Write the balanced chemical equations for these two reactions. (b) Use bond enthalpies to estimate the enthalpy changes (in kJ) for your reactions.
