P a g e | 1 Understanding the Value of Qualitative Research Yvonne Lowrey-Whitaker Research Methods SOC 333 Instructor: Ashley Colby 10-15-18
P a g e | 2 An important part of analyzing research approaches includes understanding the positive and negative aspects of varied forms of social research. Ethnography as an approach allows a researcher to immerse in a unique social world in order to experience the lives of those who live there. The most intriguing aspects of this type of qualitative research is how the researcher maintains an ethical and neutral stance, how the experience can impact them, and how they use the experience for positive social change. My goal in this assignment is to present the benefits of ethnographical research in terms of understanding a unique social world, as well as understanding the qualitative researcher’s role in performing and reporting on ethnographic research. I will do this through the resources provided, my own research of immersive ethnographical approaches, research form previous assignments so far in this course, and also through critiquing Dr. Loïc Wacquant’s work. •Explain the researcher’s role in qualitative research in general and specifically in an ethnographic approach.
P a g e | 3 The main role and scene in the for the most of the research is the boxing gym in Chicago that changed Dr. Loïc Wacquant’s life, but also the area the gym was in, the ring in general, around the close people in his life like his coach. In the article, UC's 'boxing sociologist' / Combative French professor spent 3 years in ring by Burress, it states that when he first walked into the dimly lit, odor-rich Chicago gym that was to become his home, he had no idea that he would try boxing himself. He is focusing in on the gym and how it specifically smells and feels at this time bring the event of him walking into the gym come to life. In this monologue Wacquant is attempting to capture the whole picture to show how he really saw it. Another thing that I would say about the description he gives on the setting of his first time entering the gym is that it appears to be a surprising code (explained in the text Creswell & Creswell, 2018. 9.6). In a study of leadership in nonprofit organizations, we might learn about the impact of geo-warming
